Subtype is the application name.
Action is what you want Netscape to do when it encounters a file or link
with the extension given.
Extension is where you put the file type extension.

Subtype is the application name.
Application is the name of the application.

Click New, enter the Mimetype (image link to media.types) and application name (subtype), as well as the extension. Then choose an action for when Netscape Navigator encounters a link matching the extension. Choices are: Save; Launch Application; Use Netscape as Viewer; Unknown: prompt user.
Note: Here are the default mime.types which are already in the Navigator (so you may not need to configure a .mime.types file at all).
Here is an example of how to set up helper applications on X:
To configure the helper application Audio Tool on a Sun workstation, your files will look like the following (in your home directory):
.mailcap
.mime.types
So when you click on .au file links, Audio Tool will launch.
Therefore, for dvi, it should be
application/dvi dvi
application/dvi; dvi-app-name %s
This is a list of media content types and subtypes (useful because the helper-application format (MIME) is of the form type/subtype): Media Types
